Microdermabrasion back aftercare: clear steps for the first week
By Glow Skin Care | October 12, 2026
Downtown Santa Rosa / Railroad Square historic district
The most important microdermabrasion back aftercare rule is simple: for the first 48 to 72 hours, keep the treated skin cool, clean, and out of heat and sweat. One of my long-time clients put it best when she said our team doesn’t just do a treatment and send you home, we build results over time, and aftercare is a big part of that. If you’re in Santa Rosa and you want short, clear rules you can actually follow, this is your first-week plan.
First 24 to 48 hours: the sweat, heat, and chlorine rules that matter
Right after a Microdermabrasion -Back Treatment, your skin is freshly exfoliated and more reactive than usual. That’s why I’m strict about the “no heat, no heavy sweat, no soaking” window. For at least 48 to 72 hours, skip hot showers, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and chlorine pools. A quick lukewarm rinse is fine, but don’t stand with hot water hitting your back.
Cleanse gently once a day or after light sweating. Use a gentle, soap-free cleanser. No scrubs, no loofahs, no body brushes. Pat your back dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing. Then apply a fragrance-free moisturizer. Keep it simple and boring for a couple days, because “tingly” is not the goal during microdermabrasion back recovery.
Quick checkpoint: If you’re heading around Downtown Santa Rosa or Railroad Square after your appointment, bring a clean, soft layer to keep the area covered. Less sun and less friction means calmer skin.
Days 3 to 7: what to avoid after microdermabrasion on the back
By day three, most people feel pretty normal, which is exactly when they accidentally overdo it. Your job for the rest of the week is to protect the smoothness you paid for. Keep cleansing gently, moisturizing daily, and avoiding anything abrasive.
Pause the “actives” for 5 to 7 days
Hold off on exfoliating acids (like glycolic, lactic, salicylic), retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and gritty body scrubs for 5 to 7 days, or until the skin looks fully settled. If you’re flaking, peeling, or feeling extra sensitive, give it more time. Pushing through usually leads to irritation that drags out your results.
Cut down friction, especially with straps
Backpacks, tight bras, sports bras with rough seams, and fitted tops can irritate freshly polished skin. For a few days, choose breathable fabrics and a looser fit. If you commute in from Rohnert Park, Cotati, Windsor, Sebastopol, Sonoma, or Petaluma, try carrying your bag on one shoulder or using a crossbody that doesn’t rub the treated area.
Santa Rosa note: Our Mediterranean climate means sun protection matters year-round, even when it’s not blazing hot. And when wildfire smoke rolls in, your skin can feel drier and more reactive. On poor AQI days, moisturize a bit more and keep your routine extra gentle.
And please don’t pick. If you get a little flaking, let it shed on its own. Picking can create irritation marks that hang around longer than the original bump.
Post microdermabrasion sunscreen and moisturizer: keep it simple
If you take only one habit into the first week, make it this: moisturize consistently and use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ whenever your back is exposed. That includes quick walks, patio lunches, and driving with a low-back top. Freshly exfoliated skin is more likely to discolor if it gets UV exposure.
For moisturizer, choose fragrance-free and non-irritating. Think basic lotion, not “active” body treatments. If you love a body oil, keep it light and avoid essential oil blends for the first week since they can sting. If you’re tempted to “fix” texture fast, slow down. One of the reasons clients keep coming back is that we focus on real, lasting results, not a quick glow that disappears the next day.
Good rule: If a product tingles, warms, or “works hard, ” it’s probably a no for this week.
When to reach out to me at Glow Skin Care (and what’s normal)
A little pinkness, mild tightness, or light flaking can happen after microdermabrasion on the back. Most of the time it’s short-lived. If you’re planning errands or a show in Railroad Square, I usually suggest booking morning or evening so you’re not dealing with sun exposure and crowds right after your appointment.
Reach out to me if anything looks like it’s getting worse instead of better. That includes spreading redness, increasing pain, blisters, drainage, or pus. I’d rather you message or call early so we can troubleshoot quickly. Clients tell me they feel genuinely cared for here, and I take that seriously, especially in the first week when aftercare questions pop up.
“They don’t just do a treatment and send you home, they think about what your skin actually needs and build on it over time.”
One of our long-time clients
If you were searching for facials near me and landed here, you’re in the right place. This back treatment is 75 minutes and includes a double cleanse, extractions, microdermabrasion exfoliation with custom serums, a mask, and a relaxing face and neck stone massage to finish, plus serums and moisturizer. It’s $175, and it’s one of my favorite ways to smooth uneven tone and the look of scarring on the back.
Need help planning around the gym or a winery weekend? Call or email and tell me what you’ve got coming up. I’ll help you time your appointment so you don’t lose your results to heat, sweat, or sun.

A quick rebook note: why consistent care beats one-and-done
Microdermabrasion works best when we’re consistent. A lot of my long-time clients talk about lasting changes in texture and tone, not just a fresh feeling for a day or two. Aftercare is the first part of that, and follow-up is the second. If you’re working on back congestion, uneven tone, or scarring, I’ll help you space sessions so your skin keeps improving without getting overworked.
